MEET OUR KIND TEAM!

ABOUT MEGANS KIND COMMUNITY

Megan’s Kind Community (MKC) was born from a simple but powerful belief: kindness changes lives.

What began as Be Kind Be Nice (BKBN) grew from yard signs, small acts, and community connections into something bigger than we ever imagined. As the impact grew, so did the mission. Today, Megan’s Kind Community is a proud nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local organizations, families, and individuals throughout Wisconsin’s Northwoods.

Founded by Megan, a multi-medal Special Olympian with a heart for people, MKC is built on her message of compassion, inclusion, and showing up for others. Together with our board, volunteers, and supporters, we raise funds and provide support to places and people who need it most, including local Fire & EMS, food pantries, senior centers, schools, families in need, and other community partners.

We like to think of Megan’s Kind Community as a lighthouse in the Northwoods.

We are not the boat asking for rescue.

We are the light.

The steady, welcoming light that helps other boats find their way to safe harbor.

Our role is to guide, support, and strengthen the good work already happening around us, and to step in when help is needed most. As a nonprofit, every dollar raised goes back into the community to fuel kindness, meet real needs, and build stronger connections.

The message remains. The mission grows.

Kindness isn’t changing. It’s evolving.

And we’re just getting started.

Megan Heyen - Founder/ Chair of Sunshine Committee

Hi!  I am Megan Heyen.  Megans Kind Community was started because I feel people need to Be a Buddy, Not a Bully.  I moved to Mercer in 2020 with my mom and dad.  I work at The Pines Restaurant where I keep the Beer Garden spic and span for everyone to enjoy!  Help us spread my message of Be Kind Be Nice!  Make sure you say ‘hi’ to me when I am out and about!

Mary Jo Heyen - Chair/treasurer

I was born and raised in Milwaukee and spent 28 wonderful years in Glendale, where my husband and I raised our two daughters, Megan and Kayla. In 2020, we made the move “Up North” to Mercer, embracing small-town life and a strong sense of community.

Now retired, I am somehow even busier than ever and loving every minute of it. As Megan’s mom and active part of Megan’s Kind Community, I am proud to help spread Megan’s vision and message of kindness. What began as supporting our daughter’s journey has grown into a full-heart mission to help make our community, and the world around us, a little brighter, one kind act at a time.

GAIL ORGAS - Board Member

I have lived in Mercer since December 2014. I work part-time at The Wampum Shop. I am a Packers, Bucks, Badgers and Brewers fan. I worked for AT&T for 32 years in various departments. I was born and raised in Pewaukee WI.  I am excited to be apart of Megans mission to help spread kindness in the Northwoods.

Kayla Heyen - Secretary

I am lucky enough to be Megan’s younger sister! I was born and raised in Glendale, WI but moving to Mercer in June! After my family moved to Mercer in 2020 I fell in love with the north woods. I am currently a high school special education teacher and have been for the past 7 years. I have a deep passion for cooking and entertaining and love sharing those passions with others! I am honored to join the MKC team and can’t wait to continue to spread Megan’s message far and wide!
